Iodine is a trace mineral that’s naturally found in some foods, such as seaweed, fish, iodized table salts, eggs, and beef liver.[1] Consuming enough iodine through diet alone is quite challenging which is why many choose to supplement their iodine intake.
Iodine is essential for optimal thyroid function because it’s a key component of the two main thyroid hormones – thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).[1] Thyroid hormones are primarily responsible for regulating various biochemical processes, including protein synthesis, metabolism, and enzymatic reactions.
A low iodine intake can lead to hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce an adequate amount of thyroid hormone. The primary signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism are weight gain, fatigue, cold sensitivity, dry skin, and constipation.
Hypothyroidism is most prevalent in older women. It’s also important to note that during pregnancy, the recommended daily intake of iodine increases from 150 mcg to 200 mcg per day.[1] As you can see, iodine is crucial for thyroid function, which is the master regulator of metabolism, so we made sure to include it in GRLPWR V2.
Similar to iodine, magnesium is an essential mineral that’s crucial for thyroid function. However, it’s also a cofactor for more than 300 enzymatic reactions, such as blood glucose and blood pressure regulation, protein synthesis, as well as muscle and nerve function.[2]
Not to mention, magnesium is required for energy production, glycolysis, oxidative phosphorylation, development of bone, and the synthesis of DNA, RNA, and the master antioxidant, glutathione.[2]
Magnesium is present in several foods, including kale, spinach, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. With that said, consuming an adequate amount of magnesium on a daily basis is quite difficult for most people with diet alone.
In terms of thyroid function, magnesium is required for the conversion of T4, which is the inactive thyroid hormone, into T3, the active thyroid hormone. Therefore, when magnesium levels are low, the thyroid does not function properly.
Every serving of GRLPWR contains 105 milligrams (25% DV) of magnesium, as magnesium bisglycinate chelate, which is the most bioavailable form. In other words, your body is better able to absorb and utilize this form of magnesium, rather than excreting it.
Olive leaf extract, also known as Olea europaea, comes from one of the oldest species of trees in the Mediterranean region.[3] Olive oil is derived from the fruits of the olive leaf tree and is a major component of the Mediterranean diet, which is considered to be one of the healthiest diets that exist.
Research shows that olive oil and its constituents may have preventative effects on various health conditions, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes.[3] Olive leaf constituents also have strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which are advantageous for a variety of health conditions. It seems that the monounsaturated fatty acids and polyphenols, including oleuropein, are the primary components that provide these health benefits.[3]
Instead of consuming large amounts of olive oil on a daily basis, you can also supplement with olive leaf extract in order to supply your body with these beneficial polyphenols. It turns out that oleuropein is the most effective bioactive constituent, so that’s what you want to look for when supplementing with olive leaf extract.[3]
Although supplementing with olive leaf extract is beneficial for men and women, it’s especially beneficial for women because it targets health conditions that are more prevalent in women, such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer, postmenopausal disorders, dysmenorrhea, and osteoporosis.[3] Furthermore, other studies suggest that oleuropein may help improve various thyroid conditions, most notably hypothyroidism, and osteoporosis.[3]
One of the biggest improvements we made to GRLPWR V2 is dropping the indol-3-carbinol and adding 200 milligrams of diinodolymethane (DIM) and we will explain why! Indole-3-carbinol is a bioactive chemical that’s naturally found in various foods, such cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower. But in order to get enough indole-3-carbinol to see positive results, you have to consume quite a lot of broccoli. Therefore, supplementation is a much better option.
After the body ingests indole-3-carbinol it has to convert that compound into DIM in order to be used for various functions. The benefits of indole-3-carbinol and DIM are relatively the same, however, the body doesn’t always convert the indole-3-carbinol into just DIM.[4] So instead of using indole-3-carbinol, we decided to use a direct source of DIM, so it’s likely more effective, beneficial, and stable.[4]
The primary reason that DIM was added to this formula is its ability to promote hormone detoxification, increase the ratio of good estrogen to bad estrogen, and support healthy testosterone to estrogen ratio.[4] In other words, DIM is very effective at balancing out your hormone levels, which is key for looking, feeling, and performing betters, especially around your period.
Chaste tree berry, also known as Vitex agnus-castus, is a plant extract that’s native to the Mediterranean region.[5] Chaste tree berry extract has a long history of use for the treatment of various medical conditions.[5] But it seems to be particularly effective in reducing the symptoms associated with menopause and premenstrual syndrome (PMS).[5,6]
Chaste tree extract is rich in compounds that are classified as phytoestrogens, including angusides. Phytoestrogens can raise progesterone levels, balance estrogen levels, and ease symptoms of menopause, PMS, and endometriosis.[5,6] Some research even suggested that chaste tree extract has the potential to positively affect the pituitary gland, specifically the part that secretes luteinizing hormone, which increases progesterone levels.[6]
In regards to PMS, supplementing with chaste tree extract may reduce the following symptoms:
It seems that chaste tree extract expresses its effects by reducing the levels of prolactin, and balancing other hormones, including progesterone and estrogen.[5]
In regards to menopause, supplementing with chaste tree extract may help improve the following symptoms:
Some other potential benefits of chaste tree extract include reduced inflammation, decreased headaches, improved bone health, and more![5,6]
L-theanine is an amino acid that’s naturally found in tea leaves along with caffeine. L-Theanine is known for its ability to promote relaxation, reduce anxiety, and lower stress levels, without causing drowsiness.[7] L-theanine carries out its calming effects by increasing the activity of the alpha frequency band within the brain.[7]
L-theanine is often paired with caffeine in various dietary supplements to take the edge off of caffeine. Together, caffeine and L-theanine, are great for increasing focus, alertness, mood, and cognition.[7] Even though there is no caffeine in GRLPWR V2, you can always use this alongside your morning coffee, BAANG, or Pre-Hype to get your day started on the right track!
Interestingly enough, L-theanine is also found in several sleep aids because it can improve sleep quality.[7] So regardless of when you take GRLPWR it will benefit you! We primarily added L-theanine to GRLPWR V2 to help reduce stress levels, increase cognitive function, and improve overall mood.
Last but certainly not least, GRLPWR V2 contains 5 milligrams of black pepper fruit extract standardized to contain 95% piperine, known as Bioperine®. This ingredient has several benefits, including increased thermogenesis, decreased pain, enhanced mood, and reduced fatigue.[8]
However, Bioperine® is primarily used in supplements to increase the absorption and effectiveness of the other ingredients that are present in the product.[8] Simply put, Bioperine® will ensure that your body is able to utilize all of the ingredients in GRLPWR V2 more effectively.
