All of a sudden, Thanksgiving is here and Christmas cookies are around the corner. Bring on the carb coma for days right!? 

Actually, let’s prove that theory wrong! Being a “healthy human” during the holidays is totally possible. Trust me, you don’t have to go off track and put on some winter weight to enjoy this magical time of year. I’ll never forget Thanksgiving last year. It was the launch of KPOW Nutrition. Who remembers the avocado pic on facebook? I was at my parents’ house and had my KPOW Keto in tow. I enjoyed a low carb Thanksgiving dinner and I worked the night away helping people understand this high fat low carb lifestyle. And guess what, I didn’t have any sugar cravings and I surely didn’t feel deprived. 

You may be wondering “what the heck am I going to eat?” I get it. This time of year is crazy enough, your nutrition shouldn’t be something that stresses you out too.

Here’s some tips to help you survive Thanksgiving dinner and all the parties leading up to Christmas Day. With some thoughtful eating, it’s actually quite easy to stick to a higher fat and lower (HFLC) carb plan. The only thing that may get in the way are traditions of the past and your brain telling you it’s ok to indulge. Here’s the thing, it IS ok to treat yourself but we all have that fine line of when we cross it, we keep going and going and going and…. UGH GROSS! Know your line! And if you stick to the HFLC plan below, your true sense of “hunger” will be satisfied, your brain will be clear, and your energy will have you thanking yourself instead of wanting to go take a nap.

Here’s the holiday GP (game plan):

  • Meat! Turkey, turkey, turkey is the star of the day and don’t you dare say no. White and brown meat. And yes, you can eat the skin if you’re limiting your starchy carbs. Speaking of, watch the gravy because most traditional recipes include flour. For other gatherings, any meat orcharcuterie board is a great appetizer! Try spelling that without google. All in all, get your #meatheadgoals on!
  • Cauliflower is a great alternative to carb heavy sides. Cauliflower mash with grass fed butter will never replace the OG mashed potatoes but it does come pretty close. Make a small side for yourself if you think others will turn their head.
  • Roasted brussel sprouts and bacon oh my! Everything is better with bacon and crispy brussels are the bomb! Not a fan? Roast up any veggie like broccoli or green beans and add your favorite holiday seasonings to give it a festive feel.
  • BIG ASS SALADS are always in style! Veggies, nuts, bacon, cheese, avocado, and avocado oil dressings like primal kitchen brand. Sorry, no croutons.
  • Veggie Trays and your choice of a fatty dip. Buffalo chicken dip is my fave! Yep, dip it up! Just keep it low carb and skip the chips and you’re good to go.
  • Deviled eggs
  • Stuffed olives
  • Celery and almond (or peanut) butter logs
  • Mixed nuts and pistachios (with shells keep you busy) for snacks
  • Fat bomb desserts! Give it a google and see how easy it can be to make your own sweet treats. 

Being able to stick to a healthy lifestyle is all about eating things you love, enjoying food, and not feeling deprived.
